The MSPCA-Angell network of hospitals is seeking applicants for a Board Certified Small Animal Surgeon that will work at both Angell Animal Medical Center (AAMC) in Boston, MA and Angell West in Waltham, MA. Angell is part of the MSPCA, one of the oldest and most respected humane organizations in the world. Angell has served the greater Boston and scenic New England area as a primary care facility, a 24-hour emergency hospital, and as a tertiary referral center for over a century. Angell West, a specialty and emergency care facility, opened in 2014. The hospital is ideally situated close to metro-west communities and those north and south of Boston, with high-quality primary care veterinary hospitals serving as our referral base.
WHO WE ARE:
MSPCA-Angell is a premier veterinary institution staffed by 50 senior veterinarians, 25 interns, and 14 residents. Angell offers specialty services in dentistry, pain medicine, acupuncture, anesthesiology, avian and exotic medicine, behavior, cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care medicine, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, nutrition, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, anatomic and clinical pathology, and surgery. The current surgery staff is comprised of four board certified surgeons and three small animal surgical residents, as well as a surgical specialty intern. AAMC is a rich educational environment offering weekly on-site continuing education seminars and regular multi-disciplinary specialty rounds.
Our collegial hospital staff at Angell West includes emergency/critical care, internal medicine, avian/exotics, cardiology, physical rehabilitation, dermatology, and behavior. We have 13 senior veterinarians and 4 interns. You would be joining a surgery/anesthesia department with another surgeon and 5 dedicated support staff. OUR HOSPITAL:
Angell Boston is an 80,000 square foot, state-of-the-art hospital containing a critical care unit, blood bank, multiple specialty rooms, 6 surgical suites, electrodiagnostic equipment (Cadwell, Nicolet), full service clinical laboratory, and histopathology laboratory for on-site biopsy evaluation. Intra-operative surgical biopsies can be processed via cryomicrotome. AAMC’s Diagnostic Imaging Center, supported by 3 board-certified radiologists, has a new state-of-the-art 16 slice Toshiba CT, a brand new 1.5 T MRI, and C-Arm for fluoroscopic imaging. The construction of a new, fully equipped Critical Care Unit is scheduled to be completed within the next 10 months.
Angell West is approximately 18,000 square feet and has been recently renovated and expanded. We are equipped with 3 spacious surgical suites with natural light, as well as a sizeable surgical preparation and induction area. Angell West is outfitted with ultrasound, echocardiography, a CT scanner, endoscopy, video otoscopy, laparoscopy, an in-house laboratory (Abaxis, NOVA, and Procyte machines), oxygen cages, telemetry, and an on-site blood bank. A new Arthex tower for arthroscopy and additional laparoscopy equipment was recently acquired, expanding our minimally invasive surgery offerings. Digital radiography is performed on-site in Waltham with interpretation of all films by the radiology service at Angell Boston 6 days a week. Full abdominal ultrasounds are available 6-7 days a week as well. We have an extensive on-site physical rehabilitation service, run by two certified veterinarians, which provides a large above-ground pool, two under water treadmills, land based exercise facilities, and various ancillary services. Twice daily delivery of laboratory samples from Angell West to the fully equipped Angell Boston laboratory, staffed by two boarded pathologists, ensures timely results. We work in collaboration with the Boston staff to provide the highest quality patient and client care in a seamless environment.
POSITION DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The schedule for this position would be 2 days per week at Angell Boston and 2 days per week at Angell West, allowing for a variety of cases and collaborative opportunities. We are seeking a Board Certified Surgeon (or a residency-trained veterinarian) with skills and experience both in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. The caseload comes from appointments, in-house referral, the emergency service, and referrals from our community practices. Individuals are expected to participate in the training of the surgical residents and in the training of interns, as well as providing consultations to the Angell veterinary staff.

Qualified applicants must have a DVM or equivalent veterinary degree and must be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), or eligible to sit for the boards.
