Description: The shelter is looking for a full-time shelter veterinarian to serve as the organization’s veterinarian reporting to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. This is a full time position with the primary objective of providing and supervising the provision of quality medical care to the sheltered pets (both routine well pet care and management of illness/injury as needed), managing the shelter’s spay/neuter clinic including performing high quality/high volume surgical procedures, and providing education to the public about proper pet health care and promoting our No-Kill philosophy.

Located in southeast Texas, Brazoria County is a vibrant, growing community. The SPCA of Brazoria County is located in Lake Jackson, approximately an hour south of Houston and one hour southwest of Galveston. In addition to advocacy, education and a low-cost spay neuter clinic, The SPCA of BC partners with three nearby cities to operate an open admissions animal shelter with an intake of 3800 dogs and cats each year and providing a full range of animal services. The SPCA operates this shelter as a No-Kill facility.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Include but not limited to the following:

• Lead the evaluation and implementation of standard medical protocols for sheltered pets to optimize health and the potential for successful adoption
• Supervise the provision of health care to injured/ill animals (both on an individual and shelter-wide basis) as necessary.
• Perform high quality/high volume spay and neuter surgical procedures
• Perform duties as necessary for vaccination clinics held for the public
• Physical ability to perform job duties including standing for long periods, safe animal restraint and bite prevention, and some lifting (up to 40#)
• Oversee the drug and medical supply chain for the shelter and ensure compliance with controlled substance laws and policy for drugs as needed for the spay/neuter program
• Participate as an active member of the shelter management team including the Executive Director, Director of Operations and key team leaders
• Professional interactions and appearances as needed with the Board of Directors, Volunteers, donors/sponsors, media events, and the general public
• Educational actives for public education of proper pet care
• Treating employees/staff and animals in the shelters care with respect at all times
• Promote teamwork and positive interactions between staff including staff interactions with the general public
• Identify and help with resolution of any ethical issues within the shelter environment
• Lead in evaluating and euthanizing pets when necessary
• Professional demeanor and ability to organize and utilize time effectively in a fast-paced shelter environment
• Some on-call duty for emergencies is required

Qualifications and Skills

• Experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate
• Maintain an active TX state veterinary license and DEA license in good standing including necessary continuing education requirements
• Strong leadership, process improvement, time management, organizational and productive conflict resolution behaviors while displaying effective communication in all areas.
• Success in motivating, planning, organizing, delegating and supervising the work of a diverse staff to ensure the effective and efficient management of quality care for animals in a shelter environment

Salary: dependent on experience and surgical proficiency
