Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is looking for a chief administrative officer (CAO) to provide strategic, analytical, and operational oversight for fiscal, space, and major equipment decisions across the Cummings School Veterinary Group (CSVG). The CVSG is comprised of 7 teaching hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic laboratories, collectively generating approximately $50 million in annual revenue while support our teaching and research missions. Reporting to the dean, the CAO is a senior position providing leadership and oversight in the strategic financial and infrastructure analysis and decision-making for the CVSG, guiding the future of the school’s clinical and diagnostic activities toward the school’s strategic vision. This includes a key role in the proposed expansion of the school’s hospital/clinic/diagnostic facilities to meet its clinical, education, and research missions.
The CAO will work directly with the hospital and clinic directors, the senior financial persons in each unit, Tufts Budget Center, and the Cummings School’s dean’s office. They will have direct management of the financial support team and the clinic asset team for the Foster Hospital for Small Animals and the Hospital for Large Animals. The CAO will provide detailed analysis, review, and innovation in the areas of clinical accounting, appropriate financial analysis and reporting, billing, accounts receivable management, cost management, fee setting based on cost analysis, equipment, infrastructure, and capital planning. The Chief Administrator is expected to facilitate collaboration and integration across the CVSG.
The CSVG provides primary and advanced veterinary care for animal patients across New England and serves as the primary training environment for veterinary students, interns, and residents. The Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) and the Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) in North Grafton, MA provide state-of-the-art, 24-hour, emergency, and multi-specialty care for small animals (FHSA) and large animals (HLA). They are the two largest hospitals in the CSVG. Tufts Veterinary Field Service provides ambulatory care for large animals in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. The Lerner Spay and Neuter Clinic provides support for shelters and rescue societies. Tufts at Tech provides care for underserved populations in a partnership with Worcester Technical High School. Tufts Wildlife Clinic provides care of native wildlife species of New England. Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory provides services primarily for internal clients, but also serves external clients. The CSVG collectively provides care for approximately 100,000 animals per year.
