This Practice Director will lead Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic (AAVEC) in Annapolis, MD. The Annapolis facility boasts approximately 28,000 sq. ft. of space designed with minimal impact to our natural environment, and to ensure that our clients and patients receive superior service and care. AAVEC is the premier 24-hour emergency hospital in the Annapolis area and is highly respected by local and regional primary care veterinarians.

The Practice Director will partner with the Managing Veterinarians to provide a smooth and profitable operation by driving revenue and managing costs while creating a hospital culture based on high quality patient care and exceptional customer service. Responsibilities include managing, planning, and leading the overall operations of the hospital, and cultivating a supportive and collaborative team environment.
Leadership
- Directly oversees all operations and business activities and leads staff for all departments.
- Partners effectively with the Medical Directors, who are responsible for the overall level of medicine and high quality patient care.
- Demonstrates a strategic orientation by translating a vision into actionable plans and activities and by managing operations effectively to achieve objectives.
- Directs leadership team to facilitate resolution of issues within the hospital.
- Consciously shapes a positive hospital culture based on trust and teamwork that caters to the needs of our clients and referring veterinarians.
- Passionate about providing resources, support, and supervision for the hospital staff.
- Acts as a champion for change and identifies, shares, and promotes best practices.
- Set strategic and tactic goals in partnership with leadership and Medical Directors.
People Management
- Partners with the Medical Directors and hospital Supervisors to address staffing needs including hiring, training, reviewing, and performance management.
- Implements performance-based incentives and rewards, and recognition programs.
- Manages all hospital clinical support staff and admin team members.
- Ensures staffing targets, interviews and on-boarding process is executed well.
- Operations and Client Service
- Inspirational and motivational leader who will drive results across all elements of the business. Sets goals and evaluates progress toward goals.
- Directs growth activities to support business objectives and plans. Provides thought leadership, coaching, and mentoring to elevate hospital leadership team—and the entire team—to increased performance and productivity levels.
- Understands lean principles and identifies and executes opportunities to improve processes and create efficiencies.
- Oversees employee benefits program and hospital insurance plans.
- Develops and implements hospital policy, including DEA/Controlled Substances and OSHA compliance.
- Monitors computer systems, PIMS (Ezyvet) and works with NVA-CF IT HelpDesk to resolve technical systems/equipment issues.
- Partners with Field Leadership to spearhead operational initiatives.
- Demonstrates and reinforces the highest level of client service.
- Resolves client issues and escalations and oversees client follow-up communication.
- Partners with the Area Marketing Manager on strategic client communications and local marketing efforts
Financial Management
- Responsible for accounting and finance processes within the hospital, as well as creation of an annual operating budget.
- Leads hospital financial activities, including monthly review of financial statements and appropriate corrective action in response to variances and trends.
- Applies continuous improvement principles to existing financial and operating processes with constant communication and feedback loop with doctors and hospital staff.
Requirements / Personal Attributes
- 5+ years of progressive operational management experience with a record of success, including experience managing a P&L.
- CVPM, MBA or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Learns quickly and can absorb new information rapidly.
- Self-motivated while also expert at motivating, coaching, and inspiring others.
- Ability to roll up your sleeves and get things done with enthusiastic participation.
- Veterinary or human experience preferred, but not required.
- Experience managing a 24/7 operations preferred, but not required.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
