Recently rated in the Top Ten Best Zoos in the country, The Memphis Zoo is home to a diverse collection of over 4,000 animals representing over 400 species. This internship is an educational position designed to immerse the intern in all aspects of medical and daily care for the zoo’s entire animal collection, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and aquatic species. In addition to clinical work, the veterinary intern will have opportunities to participate in procedures alongside the zoo’s active research department.
The intern will gain hands on experience in the duties listed below: • Preventive health care including procedures such as physical exams, quarantine exams and pre-shipment exams. • Perform necropsies. • Maintain complete medical records within Species360. • Effectively communicate with staff in all departments. • Work effectively with Zoo Hospital team.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time 40 hrs per week position which regularly requires weekend work. Must have flexibility to respond to and be on-site for after hour medical emergencies. Internship is scheduled to last up to 1 year and will be eligible to participate in the MZS benefits program.
Required Education & Experience: • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA-accredited institution. • Successful completion of the National Board Examination • State of Tennessee Veterinary Medical License.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience handling and caring for exotic animals.

Reporting Structure: Reports to Senior Veterinarian.
Additional Salary Information: This is a salaried position paid bi-weekly. Intern will be eligible to participate in MZS's benefits program.
