Job Summary: Assist Vets w/ all treatment, care of animal patients.
Duties and Responsibilities: Medical Center • Assist coordinating daily surgery, treatment schedules; perform pre-surgical duties, physical exams. • Calculate, administer and record pre-anesthetic drugs; complete controlled drug logs. • Monitor anesthesia. • Perform, administer medical treatments. • Operate radiology equipment. • Perform dental cleanings, radiographs. • Respond to emergency situations. • Prep lab samples, evaluate in-house lab work.
Shelter • Perform daily health evaluations, scheduled treatments. • Assist vets w/ daily rounds. • Assist in care, treatment of animals in foster. • Assist w/ euthanasia of shelter animals when needed. • Respond to post-adoption health inquiries. • Notify behavior team of animal behavioral needs, concerns.
Client Service/Education • Educate clients on pre/post -surgical care. • Provide orientation, training to vet students, assistants, interns. • Represent organization in professional, courteous manner. Provide quality customer service. • Attend, participate in training programs.
Operations • Assist w/ daily operations. • Clean, prep surgical instruments; ensure supplies are available, ready. • Maintain vet equipment. • Attend continuing education. • Maintain departmental procedures, protocols. • Follow safety guidelines. • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned
Qualifications and Requirements: • Knowledge of vet tech and animal shelter procedures, protocols. • Knowledge of restraint, handling techniques, general animal safety practices, including recognizing animal behavior patterns. • Ability to work effectively, independently and in team; in atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, deadline pressures; to be flexible, detail oriented; to prioritize • Excellent interpersonal skills w/ customer service orientation. Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, professionally. • Computer literacy w/ proficient use of programs including Microsoft Office programs, email, Internet and database software. • Passion for HRA mission, for caring of all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament or species. • Ability to work weeknights, weekends, holidays as needed. Ability to work weekend vaccine, feline clinics, as needed.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50+ pounds assisted. • Ability to be comfortable working w/ cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish, wildlife. • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity on daily basis, including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, bending. • Due to nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; hostile, irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, sights; extreme temperatures.
Education and Experience: • College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Veterinarian Technician preferred. • Minimum one year of progressively responsible experience as vet tech, Experience w/ shelter medicine preferred. • Ability to pass basic vet tech skills assessment during interview process.
