The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Conservation Medicine at the level of Assistant Professor, or at the level of Associate Professor with tenure, in the Department of Ecosystem and Public Health. The successful candidate will teach Conservation Medicine and Wildlife Health in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program as well as develop new courses for our evolving graduate programs. They will also be expected to develop an externally funded and collaborative research program in the area of Conservation Medicine.
While expertise in any area of Conservation Medicine will be considered, preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated research expertise, networks and interests in wildlife health management and conservation biology. Extensive collaborative opportunities exist at the University of Calgary, both within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and with other faculties and research institutes. We work in close collaboration with the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Design, Department of Geography, Canadian Wildlife Health Co-operative, Provincial and Federal Government Agencies and the Calgary Zoo.
Teaching in the DVM program will include core concepts and clinical skills in Wildlife Health and Conservation Medicine including disease detection and diagnostics, disease surveillance and health management and current concepts in conservation biology. Specialized skills in wildlife health and conservation medicine will also be taught in the graduate student program. Required qualifications include DVM (or equivalent) and a PhD in an area clearly related to Conservation Medicine. Consideration will also be given to veterinarians with a DVSc or an MSc with Board Certification in Zoological Medicine, who have equivalent experience in Conservation Medicine and have a demonstrated record of success in research. Experience working with Conservation and Wildlife Health experts and researchers in NGOs, or government organizations would be considered an asset. Candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta.
The appointment will be at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor with salary commensurate with experience. Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor normally requires evidence of successful teaching ability or professional experience, with evidence of appropriate research or professional activity beyond that involved in the completion of academic or professional training. Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure requires evidence of teaching effectiveness, recognized research attainment or equivalent professional attainment, and a satisfactory record of service.
UCVM is the youngest veterinary medical faculty in Canada and is already well established amongst research-intensive North American veterinary colleges due to the quality of its research programs and the engagement of undergraduate and graduate students with research. There are approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. The DVM program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas, that combines discipline-based courses with extensive on- and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM uses a distributed veterinary learning community including public and private practice partners to deliver its fourth year practicum program. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with its research space being closely located with the Cumming School of Medicine providing an outstanding research infrastructure and a unique environment for comparative medical and One Health research.
