VCA Care Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital, a 24-hour emergency and boutique specialty practice practically in paradise, Santa Barbara, is currently looking for a residency trained or boarded Oncologist.
Since its inception in 2002, as Santa Barbara’s first specialty hospital as well as its first emergency practice VCA Care has worked hard to provide exceptional care with superior service to the Central Coast community. Much more attention is paid to patient care and the clients than in most other hospitals. The clientele is both sophisticated and affluent and thus likes to have its hands held. They also expect a high level of communication and are willing to pay for it. As such, applicants for this position should be friendly, hyper-cordial and have an overreaching desire to please people. The local veterinary community is also exceptionally important to the hospital's success and excellent daily rDVM communication is an expectation from any candidate applying.
The practice itself exists in what was once a speakeasy but is now a 6,000 square foot, custom built, state-of-the-art veterinary facility. It has all that one would expect from a modern specialty/ER practice including 2 surgical suites, 2 ultrasounds, a tower for laparoscopy/arthroscopy and endoscopy, 3 O2 cages, a dedicated oncology suite with a hood and a large doctors’ office with plenty of room for privacy.
The practice has a strong and experienced support staff with tremendous longevity including eight full-time technicians. Since this is a small hospital, personality is even more important than in a facility where one can disappear. At Care, everyone works closely with one another often operating as one. A team spirit, upbeat personality and a partner mentality would be expected from any applicant.
The position itself is one of growth as there is a lack of oncologists in the region. This means that you would have the opportunity for tremendous growth in an established practice with a large client and rDVM base already using the hospital's specialists. This also means that the ramp up time to becoming financially successful would be a short one. There is also an expectation that you would get out and meet the community but rest assured you'll have all of VCA and Care’s marketing team to support you. This is a great opportunity to build a department in an area that is desperate for your services. The clients and patients are already there so it’s just a matter of finding that perfect oncologist!
With regards to Santa Barbara itself, it is as idyllic a location as you are ever going to find. The weather is perfect, the people are pleasant and friendly and one simply can’t beat the quality of life. The demographics are of a highly educated population, very community involved with tons of dogs, outdoor festivals and plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded individuals. The local schools are exemplary and the lifestyle is one that simply can’t be beat. The geography is such that almost every type of outdoor activity can be had in a day. Surfing, the beach, the ocean with some of the best whale watching in the world is on one side. While horseback riding, hiking and amazing cycling trails on the other. Over the hill are vast vineyards, a gorgeous wine country and unparalleled views. There is very good reason this region is often referred to as the American Riviera. It is the best of all worlds with perfect weather for the outdoor enthusiast and a variety of cultural events (Santa Barbara Film Festival, local opera house) for the "cultural set".
To be clear, this is not one of those massive specialty practice with dozens of specialists and an ability to become anonymous. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to work in a smaller, more local, neighborhood, and boutique-like practice. If you are one that wants to see a patient and then quickly move to the next one, this might not be the place for you. VCA Care is looking for someone that wants a more intimate, closer relationship with his or her clients. The reason that clients are so loyal and compliance so high is because of the personal relationship forged between the specialists and both their clients and their rDVMs. Excellent medical skills are a prerequisite but personal communication skills are no less important.
A wonderful, established busy practice with a great team, in a beautiful facility and in Santa Barbara. What else could you ask for?!
