We are currently seeking a Program Support Specialist to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Rockville and Poolesville Maryland.
OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance as determined by the statement of work for SoBran BioScience Division animal care and support contracts.
Description of Duties:
Perform duties of a cage wash technician, animal caretaker, or technician as dictated by the needs of the institution’s statement of work and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for new or current position openings. The following description includes some of the duties required by these positions:
Clean and sanitize animal caging and accessory equipment
Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance according to SOPs
Process clean caging and accessory equipment appropriately, including putting bedding into cages and autoclaving cages and supplies
Assist in sanitation and decontamination in all areas of the facility as assigned
Understand and follow appropriate SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for all animal biohazard safety levels
Prepare and submit required support documentation as directed
Maintain clean and organized work and personal areas
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
Receive, examine, transfer, identify, and properly house incoming animal shipments according to SOPs
Provide food and water to animals following SOPs or approved protocols
Assist with the restraint and manipulation of various animal species
Perform daily animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment to supervisory staff
Perform routine animal husbandry
Maintain a daily animal census in assigned animal rooms
Remove weanling animals to separate cages
Maintain accurate and detailed records
Maintain animal health records
Perform prescribed treatments on animals
Read and understand technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASP’s
Perform or assist investigators with technical procedures, these include but are not limited to immunizations, bleeding of experimental animals, harvesting tissues or organs using aseptic techniques, peritoneal lavages, cell counts, food or liquid consumption studies, and splenectomies.
Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment

3. Ability to handle changing work locations in short to long term increments
4. Ability to travel locally and outside the immediate Northern Virginia/Maryland area if needed, to include the use of personal vehicle
Required Experience: Must have basic animal handling or lab animal industry experience and a desire to work with multiple species to include but not limited to rodents, rabbits, non-human primates as well as work in animal biosafety levels 1 to 3. Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties as they are assigned as outlined. Must be eligible to obtain Select Agent and LEVEL 2 FBI clearances.
Required Education: Must have a bachelors of science degree or a combination of a high school diploma or equivalent plus related animal experience. Must attain certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) when eligible.
